Val Symonds ) I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii almost six decades ago, have a BA in Fine Art, a BA in Theatre and a masters degree in Special Ed. As a child, I told my mother I wanted to sing. I learned years later that “projection” can mean you make judgments from your own perspective. My mother used to say, how can you be an artist? I can’t draw a stick figure. (projection). How can you be so funny and act on stage? I am too afraid to stand before a crowd. (projection). “Mom, I want to sing”. Well, that was the last straw I guess. Her response? “You can’t sing”. I believed her down to when I had a chance to sing in a cabaret at the theatre I was serving an apprenticeship to get in to the actor’s union and I refused to even try. Why? Because I couldn’t sing; my mom told me so. I now teach elementary school students with severe behavior disorders with not much of a creative release to say the least. One of the teachers on my staff that was already in Sing Live USA said, “Val, you must come to one rehearsal of Sing Live USA, you’d be perfect for this”. And I’m thinking, did your cheese just slide off your cracker? I can’t sing…until I listened to John Morris. Mind you, I had already sung for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and totally believed, I could NOT sing. After all, those churchy folks will let any one “sing”. In such an honest, open, kind manner, there stood John Morris…THE John Morris who turned England in to a place that finally allowed all voices to be raised. Because he believed in the average Joe? Yes. Because he has such a love for spreading joy, love, and music across the world? Yes. Because he was such a pioneer that he came to America, loved and accepted us (for our jazz hands mind you) and gave anyone a chance to live a dream of singing? In fabulous unimaginable places? YES!

Can you even believe that I, the “I can’t sing” gal actually sang during a church service IN THE VATICAN? I am most certain my grandfather, born in Naples, was there. THANKS TO MR. JOHN MORRIS! All I can promise you is that if you have a heart’s desire to sing and be with a group that will become a second family? Join SingLiveUSA TODAY….Don’t think about it….just do it and you will be doing extraordinary things in extraordinary places with one of God’s gift’s to this world Mr. John Morris the founder of Sing Live UK and now Sing Live USA!

[Marcia Dawson]One of the first and major bonding experiences that we have in Sing Live is the rehearsal.  We have a chance to chat before and after but we fill the 'middle' with lots of fun singing.  One rehearsal, however, became forever engraved in the memory of about 10 of us!

We were going to be flying to the UK to sing in The Night Of A 1000 Voices in the Royal Albert Hall.  Since there were only 10 of us, we decided that we would meet at John's condo to rehearse.
We met John at 'Teak' to carpool to his condo so we wouldn't have any parking problems.  We all ended up on the soft couches (not the best posture for singing but we were certainly comfortable) and had a fun rehearsal and then decided that we would have dinner together at 'Teak' before we scattered for home.  We left John's condo and headed for the elevators/stairs.  We all decided to take the elevator so in we go and the door closes.  We pushed the button for the ground floor, moved just a few feet and then the elevator stopped!  We all looked at each other, waited patiently for the elevator to go again, started pushing the button again and finally agreed that we were stuck in the elevator.  We tried pulling open the door but that doesn't work well from the inside or the outside so we tried the emergency telephone.  We did get an answer but it came from a monitoring station somewhere in Florida (or maybe India) and they told us that they would send a crew to rescue us.  When we asked how long this would take we got various answers, all of them meaning 'too long!'

Needless to say, no one was thrilled with this situation but we had various levels of reactions:  Hysterical laughter, smart comments, panic looks, worries about air and temperature, etc.  Cellphones were busy trying to contact the outside world - text messages were flying out.  We were knocking on the doors hoping that someone would hear us but the time ticked on.  Finally we heard footsteps and started banging on the doors.  A man asked us if we were having trouble (duh) and we asked him if he could help us get out.  He told us he would check with the management (this was on a Saturday) and then said, "Don't go anywhere!"  This set off another round of hysterics, laughter or otherwise, in the car; like would we still be there if we could go?!?!

It took about 3 calls on the emergency telephone and 50 minutes before we heard the cranking of the door opening.

You can just imagine how quickly we evacuated that car!  We all are now card carrying members of "The Elevator Gang" (we do have cards) and we have decided that if we go to John's we will walk the stairs or ride 1-2 at a time so there will be no overloading of the elevator and someone left outside to call for help!

( Danny Watson ) My relationships with SingLive USA and my (now) wife both started around the same time. Melissa knew how much music meant to me and always supported me as I went to rehearsals and listened to my learning CD with her in the car.

So it seemed logical to me that SingLive should play some role in our nuptials. When I proposed (another musical event!) and Melissa accepted we immediately began talking about dates and I threw out the fact that SingLive was going to be performing in St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, Italy on 4/10/10.

From that point on it was a foregone conclusion that we would wed on 4/3 and honeymoon in Italy, culminating in the performance with so many of my friends. It was absolutely AMAZING and everyone involved from John, Linda, Steve, EVERYONE was so positive and excited about our big event.

I love this group and it will forever be a part of my life, my memory, and my marriage.

ARLENE COLBERT SINGING IN MEMORY OF MY SON, DARIO

At the suggestion of my friend and soprano, Martha Haynie, I became the 171st member of Sing Live USA. I joined on the final night of registration.

Whew!

I am truly grateful for this amazing opportunity of being part of history in

Orlando. I love singing, and do so quite often at my church, St. Mary of

The Angels Episcopal in Orlando. However, I have recently struggled to find comfort and peace of mind.

A few months ago, my 23-year son, Dario, who lived with me all his life, was killed in a motorcycle accident. Dario had always been my biggest fan, who encouraged me to sing in our church choir and as a soloist. He was responsible for my singing the American and Canadian national anthems, on two occasions, at the Orlando Arena, prior to hockey games. His passing has left an incredibly huge hole in my heart, for he was my best friend, as well.

My friends and family have been a tremendous support system for me. I now have an additional source of strength and a new sense of purpose with the many warm and friendly people I have met. Thank you, John Morris and Sing Live USA for bringing joy and happiness to my life.

I thank Sing Live USA for doing this special tribute to him. He is truly my inspiration.

FROM BELLY DANCING TO SING LIVE!

“I am Christine Wells, 61 years young, and I live in Orlando.

Way back, I sang in my high school chorus as a first soprano.  In my senior year I was in the chorus when we did ‘Carousel’. I had no confidence in myself to go for a solo part.

In my late 40’s (and as a grandmother of 5) I started taking belly dancing lessons.  After making masters, sewing my own costumes, and performing twice in front of family and friends (and once at a restaurant), I had to quit for physical reasons.

My grandkids loved that I could belly dance...they thought it was so cool. I was sad about having to quit, but it wasn’t until I started to sing karaoke that I felt my confidence start to return.

I read about Sing Live USA, and the opportunity to sing the musicals at the Bob Carr Auditorium. I told everyone I know about this new musical chorus that was started here in the states and about John Morris and the original groups in the UK.  My daughter in Chicago said, ‘you know, Mom, if I was there, I would be singing with you’. I told her to have patience. There will be other choruses starting up all over the other states.

Since I joined, my younger sister, Judy Holcomb has also joined.  She also brought 2 friends to join.  The whole chorus has blossomed so much since my first introduction to Sing Live USA.  I feel like I am part of a family that just loves to sing.  I have learned how to hold my notes longer, and concentrate on my diaphragm.  All my family is excited about this for me, and they all came to the concert.  I am not ready yet to try out for a solo, but I do hope to some day.”

THE TWO MARCIAS - FRIENDS SINGING LIVE!

Marcia Sterner and Marcia Piersall share more than a name.
Meet Marcia Sterner:

“On our way to see ‘Wicked’ in Tampa, my friend Marcia told me about this musical activity she had signed up to participate in: singing songs from musicals on stage at the Bob Carr in Orlando (and you didn’t have to audition). As she described it I couldn’t help thinking that I would love to do it too! I haven’t sung on stage since my college days and this sounded like a great opportunity.

The rehearsals had already started but she would call to see if I could still sign on. Luckily they said I could.

For the last 25 years I have been the major spectator in my family. I figured after attending hundreds of basketball games (my husband is an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic), and another hundred soccer games, as well as a myriad of chorus and band concerts, and cheerleading competitions, it’s my family’s turn to come and see me perform.
It’s great to be a part of a group that is accomplishing something special.

We have felt the energy and excitement growing with each rehearsal. I can’t wait for the performancs!

So now my friend Marcia and I not only share a name and a job…we share Sing Live USA!”

And Marcia Piersall says:

“I suppose that I’m a Broadway performer ‘wanna be’.  I can carry a tune, but I don’t have the trained beautiful voice that many Sing Live participants have.  This makes this community perfect for me.    I love it when all the harmony parts come together with the melody in the songs during rehearsals.  With 170 other voices, I really do sound pretty good!

Just hearing the songs with piano accompaniment, I could tell that the performance would be wonderful – and it sure was.  When the orchestra was added, it was simply amazing.  I learn so much from all of the vocal coaches who lead our rehearsals.  I’m having a great time; the rehearsals go by so fast.  It was an incredible show and experience and can’t wait for the next one!

SANDRA G. FINDING THE INNER DIVA !

“When I turned 50 last year, I had an awakening of sorts. I seem to have shed my shyness in favor of a new, willing spirit.

Reaching that milestone prompted me to seek out all kinds of challenges: I’ve studied Italian and Spanish, taken up knitting, and I sewed an entire bedroom ensemble for my new grandson.

So, when I saw the article about Sing Live USA in the Orlando Sentinel, it seemed like another “personal dare” to add to my expanding resume.

While I’ve never considered myself a singer, by any stretch of the imagination, I do enjoy hamming it up with “Mr. Microphone” on occasion. The Sing Live concept emphasizes that music is for everyone and that even the ordinary can become extraordinary in the expert hands of Sing Live Director and Founder, John Morris and his talented staff.

I’ve had such fun at the rehearsals and I’ve made lasting friendships along the way. I would encourage anyone who’s hiding an ‘Inner Diva’ to join Sing Live USA and let that star shine!”

FROM BRAZILIAN SAMBA TO SING LIVE!

“My name is Sarita Schwartzmann and I am 50 years old.

I am Brazilian and have lived in Orlando since August 2004. In the last 12 years I lived in Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Thailand. I am fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and English. After working with computer companies for 25 years I now dedicate myself to work for my community. I am a director at the local Brazilian Chamber of commerce and volunteer in a regular basis with Give Kids the World and Shepherds Hope. I am married and have two children, Daniel (21 years old) and Patricia (18 years old).

“The first time I heard about Sing Live USA was through an article at the Orlando Sentinel that I read on a Saturday afternoon. I got excited about it the moment I read the first tag line. I love to sing to myself and I do it all day long. I know tons of music by heart and in any karaoke party I am the first one to start singing and the last one to stop. In my youth I danced classic ballet, then I did plays, then I planned and produced a few cultural shows and lately I’ve been participating at the Samba School parades during the carnival in Brazil, my home country. But I never had an experience with singing in public and the opportunity to participate in such a big and serious project was just thrilling. And the fact that previous experience was not a requirement couldn’t be more appealing. As I was reading the article I just saw my name written on it.

Joining Sing Live USA, I felt I belonged and everyone was really very nice to me. I just love my rehearsal nights and I look forward to them all week long. And I can’t wait for the performance night to come. I knew we would  be a hit, and we were! I can’t wait for the next one.

A FAMILY SINGING FOR JOY AND SINGING BECAUSE LIFE IS TOO SHORT NOT TO!

Meet Jessica Overberger and mom and dad, Millie and Jon. Jessica is 26 and was born with a congenital heart condition. All her life, modern medicine has supported Jessica and with her families love and support, tonight Jessica realizes a dream.

This is Jessicas story: Throughout her life her medical condition has posed a big challenge. Jessica was competitive (and excelled) in both softball and basketball at a young age but was forced to quit due to the possibility of problems with her heart. Mom and Dad were faced with the challenge of channeling her energies into something else.

That something else was music. She played clarinet and bass clarinet and sang in various groups and studied privately. She was also involved in school with cheerleading and dance team. Jessica moved to Florida to finish her undergraduate degree, ended up getting two graduate degrees, and met her husband. Three years ago her medical condition reared its ugly head after 23 years of dormancy. She spent a week in the hospital three months before her wedding. This moment in time really made everyone realize that life is too short. Soon after the wedding her parents moved to Orlando to be nearby and help out.

Jessica had lost touch with her music in college and after reflection realized life is too short not to do the things you love. She has always loved music but little ever came of it. She joined SING LIVE USA just to have the opportunity to sing. Not being able to drive to and from practice, mom or dad were the designated chauffeurs and have joined too!

READY FOR 'PROM NIGHT', DODI?

“Hello, my name is Dodi Baker.  I live in a little town called Sorrento which is close to the beautiful, historic Mt. Dora, about 20 miles outside of Orlando.

On February 3, I bought an Orlando Sentinel newspaper to have at my house during my birthday party.  As I was clearing away the debris, I noticed the full page article about Sing Live USA.  I was intrigued with the headline that told me I didn’t need to know how to sing.  ‘Wow, that’s for me’ I said to myself.  I love to sing but I don’t know how.

Here was an entire group of people I could sing with and luckily they could carry me when I falter with words or notes.  No one would notice my little voice in the crowd!  HA HA! After meeting John, Jeri, Derric, Dirk and Kevin I quickly found out that I was NOT going to fade into the crowd!  These are highly professional people who can actually hear all the voices under their care.  ‘Oh Boy, am I in trouble now!’ I thought to myself.  Well, I couldn’t be more wrong.  I have been made to feel welcome and very much a part of the whole group.  Especially the “Altoids” as Dirk calls my section.  I have been having a wonderful time and I hope that I am able to remember all the words by “Prom night”.  I will always have this experience to remember.”

 MEET THE SINGING GRANDMA!

Cheryl Mizzer, Orlando

“I am so excited to be a part of Sing Live America.  After 25 years devoting my energy to my family and career, this is something I decided I needed to do for me.  In a short time I have made many new friends and we have become a musical family.

It’s very rewarding to get back to my musical roots.  I was active in music all through school and have not been a part of a vocal ensemble since my twenties.  I am now a singing Grandma!  It’s funny – I can’t find time to go to the gym often, but I never miss a rehearsal – it’s just too much fun.”

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY!..

Meet Carol and Charlie Hoffner – and Carol’s brother Bill.

“Charlie and I live in south Orange Co. in a community called Conway.  My brother Bill lives in East Orange Co. near UCF.
Charlie and I have sung in our church choir for many years.  Even though neither of us are "solo" singers, we like singing with a large group.  We enjoy the camaraderie and consider the choir members as part of our family.

When I saw the article about Sing Live in the newspaper it tweaked my interest.  Charlie and I were at a time in our lives when we needed something more to do together, and the ad "spoke" to me.   After some discussion we decided to give it a try.  After the first introductory meeting, we invited my brother Bill to come.  He had been looking for quite awhile for a group like this to join.  He had sung with a Barber Shop group some years before but wanted something different.  He loves playing the organ but suffered a stroke last year which affected his left side. (He is left handed). Since then he has had a hard time playing.  We felt that this would be something he could enjoy.   All of us are thoroughly enjoying the music, the directors and the other singers; and we are definitively stretching our brains!   We look forward to each practice and can't wait to see how it is all put together for the "Big Show"!

HOW SING LIVE HAS CHANGED MY LIFE….

This is Bonnie Bear’s story…..

“At some point in our life, many of us make the list titled “Things I Wish To Do Before I Die”.  Some actually write their list down and set a plan in motion to accomplish all their goals.  Others like myself, not quite ready or sure how to make the commitment to reach each goal, create a mental list.  This dynamic mental list of things I long to achieve, to see, and to experience continues to grow and change as opportunities allow me to cross a wish off my list or leave me wanting more out of life.

Among the top 10 wishes on my list, was my dream to sing in a church choir.  I love to sing.  I have sung to my children since they were born, I sing to the children I work with, I sing while making dinner and  I sing in the car while wearing my blue tooth to give the illusion that I’m talking to someone.  However, I have never sung in the presence of other adults.  I have never felt like my voice was good enough to be heard by anyone else. Children are a captive, non-judgmental audience and beyond the tune of “Itsy Bitsy Spider” I felt musically talentless.

Then one day opportunity came knocking.  My friend emailed me information on Sing Live USA and stressed that no auditions were required.  After talking at length to two friends already attending Sing Live USA, I decided I needed to step out of my comfort zone and just check things out.  I attended one practice session and signed up that night.  I am having the time of my life and look forward to practice every week.  I can’t hit all the high notes yet and am not fluent at reading music notes but I have gained tremendous confidence and pride in my abilities and in myself.  As a group, we sound simply awesome and I can’t wait to share this experience with my family.”

Kelly George’s story

Music and the joy of singing has been with me so long I cannot remember a time when it was not part of me. I was blessed to see my first live professional theater production, “Barnum”, at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles, which I later learned was Glenn Close’s Los Angeles stage debut. It was magical, and as I watched I knew that that was what I needed to do with my life.

Performing in church, I sang with the choir and was quickly invited to sing solos as well, and I performed in community musical theater productions, which I loved immensely. I continued to study theater and music following high school, performing in many musical and theatrical productions at the local community college, studied acting at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa and auditioned for the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.
But I never got to go.

Before I was able to spread my wings, my potential was thwarted   as a medical condition caused me to change my direction and let go of my quest for a musical career.  Over the years, I managed to overcome this and turned my attention to other endeavors, managing to successfully complete nursing school and carve out a career as a registered nurse. Yet even as I would be considered “successful” in the traditional sense, having found a good career and the things that accompany such career success, something has been missing. After having completed the nursing degree, I now have a comfortable living in a career that affords enough time off to pursue other endeavors, and my love for music has again risen to the top of my priorities. I feel the need to answer my calling, and I struggled with this and turned it over to God, accepting that if he would allow it, I would begin trying anew to use the vocal talents I was blessed with.

It was then that I saw the ad for Sing Live USA

Since joining Sing Live, I have been impressed with the camaraderie and family atmosphere embodied at the rehearsals and by the staff.  It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to create music for the community, and it amazes me that of all the places in the world, Orlando was chosen to be the founding site in the United States.  I am grateful that God has led Mr. Morris and his team “across the pond” to bring this experience to bless the people here in this country. I am proud and excited to be a contributing part of the vision, and am thankful to Sing Live for the opportunity to sing once again
